Little Wing

Sorry, it has been so long since I last posted! Things have been going very well.

A couple days ago, I recorded my own version of the song Little Wing, by Jimi Hendrix. I learned how to play it about four years ago, and it’s a song that’s always kind of stuck in my mind. The cool thing about it is Jimi Hendrix used to improvise his guitar riffs off of a simple chord progression. For that reason, it’s nearly impossible to duplicate what he recorded on his original version. So, everyone’s version of it is unique. You can also find a version by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I was able to record the guitar with two mics recording my amp, and it turned out great! A couple of weeks ago I put some really thick strings on my guitar, so it’s in a much lower tuning than the original, but that gave it a heavy, almost SRV-like, bluesy tone. The drums are fake and the bass was recorded kind of sloppily just to give it some umph, but the guitar solo turned out really great! This was the first time I’ve recorded distorted guitar with mics in a long time for my own music, and it turned out really nice!

I hope you enjoy!

Mike and I have been recording since my computer is back up and runnin’. It’s sooo much easier on this computer. It has been so much less frustrating than it used to be. Actually, we stopped recording before my computer shut down last time, and it was because I got so frustrated recording with him. But my second monitor makes it nice. While he’s laying down a track, I can surf the web or chat on AIM or play freecell, which allows us to be a lot more productive.

One of the new songs up on here is called “Go ahead, make my day.” The name was inspired by Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. The other is called “everysundayilistentorockmusic.” The first was record a long time ago, but I’ve made changes to it and it’s finally ready to be on here, and it was the first song I’ve recorded with real drums in it. That was really fun. The second was the one we just recorded the other night. It’s got a really different feel to it. It’s only two guitars, one really clangy one, and the other really bassy, and both of them over electronic hip-hop beats. So, it’s kind of fun.

I hope you enjoy them!

Throughout the last week and a half, I received and put together the parts of my new custom-built computer. It has been incredible.

It will be my computer throughout college and it is spectacular for recording. It has an Intel Core 2 Quad Processor with two gig of RAM, two 500 gig SATA hard drives (yes, that adds up to a terabyte), a NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series video card that allows for dual monitors (I have a 22 in and a 19 in hooked up), Sound Blaster X-Fi sound card that I got for Christmas from my great-grandfather, and Windows Vista Ultimate, which I got for twenty dollars at IUPUI.

Mike and I have already start recording. It’s so much easier now. I got the upgrade software for Sony ACID. It’s been running so smoothly, and I can use the second monitor for AIM, internet, and games, which Mike is recording a track. I don’t know how soon music will be posted on here. Just because my computer is now up, doesn’t mean I’m ready to start again. There’s some equipment that I need to get before it really starts taking off.

In other news, I start at IUPUI this Wednesday, and I can’t possibly explain how excited I am for it! I attended the Mini-Bridge program last weekend, which was part of the First Generation Scholarship. It was very beneficial, and very fun. I made a few really close friends over the weekend, who I definitely plan on hanging out with more once school starts.

I’m going to try to get this thing going again, now that my computer is up! I’ll probably post later this week about school!
